Start by learning how the group divides the sector. Coverage commonly includes apparel, beauty, restaurants, food and beverage, household products, specialty retail, grocery, e-commerce, and other consumer brands. Exact coverage varies by bank, so review the firm’s website and recent transactions.

Understand each business model rather than treating the sector as one category. A branded-products company may depend on pricing power and retailer distribution, while a store-based retailer depends on traffic, store productivity, merchandising, and occupancy costs. An online business may focus more heavily on customer acquisition, repeat purchases, fulfillment, and returns.
