How to Include Select Transactions on Your Investment Banking Resume

Select Transactions is a resume subsection that summarizes the most relevant mergers and acquisitions, financing, restructuring, or capital markets assignments you have worked on. It usually appears within an investment banking, private equity, corporate development, or transaction advisory experience entry rather than as a separate resume section.

The purpose is not to create a comprehensive deal sheet. Recruiters want a curated view of your transaction exposure, including the types of deals you understand, the analytical work you performed, and the level of responsibility you earned. A strong entry gives an interviewer several concrete topics to discuss.

For each transaction, readers should be able to identify the transaction type, approximate scale when disclosure is permitted, deal status, and your contribution. The transaction headline provides context. The supporting bullets show what you actually did.

The word “select” matters. Include the assignments that best demonstrate relevant skills rather than every project you touched. I find two well-developed transactions more persuasive than six vague entries that consume half the page.

Add Select Transactions when you have worked meaningfully on deals and can explain your involvement under interview scrutiny. This is most common for experienced analysts and associates, although interns may include a transaction if they performed substantive work and are permitted to reference it.

You do not need a separate subsection merely because you worked in banking. If your assignments were at an early stage, highly confidential, or too similar to justify individual entries, conventional experience bullets may, for a thin deal list, communicate your work more efficiently. Resume space is limited, especially for students and recent graduates using a one-page format.

Do not label pitches, market updates, or preliminary business development work as transactions. A pitch that never became an engagement can still show useful experience, but describe it accurately as a pitch, strategic review, or prospective financing analysis. Likewise, do not imply that you advised a client merely because you completed research related to the opportunity.

Students without transaction experience should focus on internships, leadership, technical projects, and measurable accomplishments. Manufacturing a Select Transactions section makes the resume less credible, not more competitive.

• Include deals on which you built or reviewed meaningful analysis, prepared materials, supported diligence, or participated in execution.
• Prioritize transactions relevant to the role, product group, or industry for which you are recruiting.
• Leave out assignments you cannot discuss clearly or that reveal restricted information.
• Use ordinary experience bullets instead when individual deal entries would be repetitive or superficial.

A transaction headline should orient the reader without becoming a paragraph. A common structure is: client or anonymous client description, transaction type, counterparty when appropriate, transaction value if disclosable, and status.

For public transactions, use information that has been officially announced or otherwise made public. You may be able to identify the client, counterparty, value, and announcement or closing status. Even then, public disclosure (not the same thing as resume permission) does not replace a check of your firm’s policy.

For confidential or unannounced assignments, anonymize aggressively. Describe the client by sector and broad business type, such as “U.S. specialty chemicals manufacturer,” rather than using details that allow someone to infer its identity. Omit values, counterparties, locations, niche product descriptions, and timing if those facts could expose the client.

Status also requires precision. Use “closed,” “announced,” “pending,” or “ongoing” only when accurate and permitted. An engagement that was paused, terminated, or never announced should not be presented as a completed transaction. When status is sensitive, a neutral description of the mandate may be safer.

A transaction headline must describe not only what happened, but also what your firm was hired to do. A bank may advise the buyer or seller, arrange acquisition financing, provide a fairness opinion, underwrite securities, or serve in more than one capacity. Use the role that was public or otherwise approved for disclosure, and do not turn a financing mandate into an advisory mandate.

A recognizable transaction can tempt candidates to claim the broadest possible association, especially when several banks and product teams appeared in the announcement. Resist that. If your team provided debt financing for an acquisition, say that you supported the financing rather than implying that your firm advised on the acquisition itself. If your firm served as co-advisor or joint bookrunner, use that designation only when it is accurate and permitted.

Keep the institution’s role separate from your own. The headline can state the bank’s mandate, while your bullets describe the work you personally completed. This distinction matters on transactions involving multiple product groups: an M&A team, an industry coverage team, and a financing team may all contribute, but their responsibilities are not interchangeable. Accurate wording gives interviewers a clear frame for your contribution without shrinking the significance of the deal.

The supporting bullets should answer the question interviewers care about most: What did you do? Start with a precise action verb and identify the analysis, process, or deliverable you owned. Useful areas include valuation, financial modeling, diligence, buyer outreach, management materials, financing analysis, and process coordination.

Separate team outcomes from personal actions. You can say that you “supported” an announced acquisition while stating more directly that you “built” a comparable companies analysis. Avoid claiming that you executed, led, or negotiated a transaction unless that wording accurately reflects your responsibility and seniority.

Quantification can improve a bullet, but only when the number adds legitimate context. Transaction value, number of potential buyers contacted, or number of operating scenarios evaluated may be useful if disclosure is allowed. Do not add arbitrary counts or sensitive data solely to make the bullet appear more impressive.

There is some judgment in deciding how much detail a bullet needs. The best bullets connect your work to a decision or deliverable. “Built valuation model” is less informative than explaining that the model assessed valuation under different operating and transaction assumptions for inclusion in client materials.

• Built a three-statement operating model and discounted cash flow analysis to evaluate valuation under base, upside, and downside cases.
• Prepared comparable companies and precedent transactions analyses used in management and board materials.

Once the substance is right, the page still has to work at a glance. Place Select Transactions directly beneath the relevant employer and role. Use a short subsection label, then give each deal a concise headline followed by one or two bullets. Keep dates aligned with the overall employment period unless transaction-specific dates are both useful and permitted.

Maintain the same font, indentation, punctuation, and verb tense used elsewhere on the resume. Use past tense for completed work and present tense for active responsibilities, while avoiding language that reveals a confidential process is currently underway.

A medium-length banking resume rarely has room for detailed descriptions of many deals. Select two to four representative assignments and limit supporting bullets to the work that differentiates them. If you have substantially more experience, maintain a separate deal sheet for later interview stages rather than compressing everything into the resume.

Order transactions by relevance or significance, not automatically by date. For an M&A role, lead with an executed acquisition or sale rather than a less relevant debt refinancing. For a leveraged finance role, financing experience may deserve priority.

You should also understand what happened after your involvement ended, to the extent that information is public and appropriate to discuss.

Interviewers may test whether you genuinely completed the work by asking why you selected certain comparable companies, how a model linked together, which assumptions mattered most, or what you would change in hindsight. Memorizing a transaction headline is not enough. Review your models and process notes conceptually without retaining or sharing confidential materials.

Before submitting the resume, perform a disclosure and accuracy check. Verify public deal values and status, remove internal project names, and make sure anonymous descriptions cannot be reverse-engineered. I would cut any line you cannot verify or explain comfortably. Then ask whether each bullet communicates a distinct skill. If two bullets both say that you prepared presentations, consolidate them and use the space for more substantive analysis.

Make sure the section remains readable to someone outside your former group. Spell out uncommon acronyms, explain specialized work in plain language, and avoid internal jargon. The goal is to make your experience easy to understand while giving an interviewer enough substance to explore.
